How are conservatives being conservative by using government to ban abortion, gay marriage, drugs, etc?

The modern day neocons want to use the Federal Government to define marriage, prohibit abortion, prohibit drugs, prohibit prostitution, prohibit polygamy. How is this conservatism? I thought conservatism was allowing people to do what they want to exercise their civil liberties without government involvement? They are doing the exact opposite by using a Federal Bureaucracy to prohibit things they deem immoral. Republican, Conservatives how can you justify using the Federal Government to prohibit people from committing these acts? How are conservatives being conservative by using government to ban abortion, gay marriage, drugs, etc?
it is because conservatives want to protect morality. How are conservatives being conservative by using government to ban abortion, gay marriage, drugs, etc?
Well, marriage has to be defined one way or another because some federal policies distinguish between statuses of marriage (namely income tax). Personally, I'd go with allowing the states to define marriage then the federal government would follow that. However that still requires the federal government making some sort of declaration of how they define marriage.. even if that definition only says that it's defined as per the state in which the person is a citizen.

Abortion is an easy one. It's thought of as murder and they feel that they should be laws against criminal acts. That's pretty easy to justify.

Drugs is similar in that most of the illegal ones do a lot of harm.

Prostitution is also similar as it tends to cause a higher crime rate in there area in which it is present. Also it could be thought of as a concern for spreading of diseases.

In fact, I think you're looking at it wrong. Conservatives favor making such things illegal because that is a much simpler thing to manage than for the government instead having to regulate those things as would likely happen if completely legal. Also keep in mind that Conservatism is a combination of fiscal conservative values as well as a preference to traditional values.
Definition of the word conservative = disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.(dictionary)

That pretty much answers all three of your questions.

1.) Abortion - that is covered by the ';to restore traditional'; part.

2.) gay marriage - that is covered by the first part.

3.) drugs - again covered by the first part.

4.) prostitution - again ' ' ' ' .

5.) polygamy - again ' ' ' ' .

So in answer to your question. Yes. From the words definition, that is exactly what they are doing. Your definition of conservative was not accurate that is your only stumbling point.
The republicans have never tried to have the federal government ban abortions, ban gay marriage

Drugs were banned by a democratic Congress in the 1930's, so why you blaming that on republicans.

Gay marriages were banned by democratic state legislatures.
Abortion - ending a life

Gay Marriage - immoral and unnatural

Drugs - kill.

So, we should let people kill all the unborn babies they feel like. Everyone should be gay? Streets should be littered with stoners, lined up a 711 buying a pack of joints? Nice.
These christian conservatives want to use government to ban abortion and gay marriage (none of which is mentioned in the gospels) but refuse to use government to help the poor (which is basically what the Jesus gospels was about).
I find it hysterical that the conservatives can say they stand for less government when they say things like that.

And after the Bush/Cheney cartel, how can anyone ever think that conservatives are for LESS GOVERNMENT???
Well, I'm a conservative, and I'm not against gay marriage. Some of my best friends are gay, and we went to their wedding!
Yes. What is immoral to you?
Modern day conservatives are worried that the US Supreme Court (which is part of the federal government too) will strip away from state governments the traditional power of states to define who may get married to whom. And the reason they are worried about it is because the Court has already been stripping away from states the power to ban ';sodomy'; and to create an amendment of the state constitution like Colorado's ';Amendment 2.'; Please look at the Supreme Court's rulings in Lawrence v. Texas and in Romer v. Evans. I am one of the people who believes that the Supreme Court is full of liars and are misinterpreting the Constitution and usurping state powers, so to me it is perfectly legitimate for another of the branches of the federal government -- the branch that is supposed to be the one that MAKES laws -- to exercise its power to restrain the Supreme Court from usurping state powers.

';I thought conservatism was allowing people to do what they want to exercise their civil liberties without government involvement?';

No, you do not understand conservatives. Conservatives want to conserve things. State governments have traditionally been able to legislate against abortion, gay marriage, incestuous marriage, prostitution, and plenty of other examples of legislated morality. Conservatives in the federal government ought to be fighting hard to preserve in the states the powers that states have traditionally have exercised, and prevent the Supreme Court from usurping state powers. There is nothing at all contradictory in doing so.
Simple hypocrisy, plain and simple.
