Prop 8 in California Gay marriage ban- how do you justify denying rights to people?

Are you sqeamish, discriminating, over-fanatical and religion while trying to force that on everyone, or dumb?

I'm straight and I see no reason to ban it.

It's not about the children!Prop 8 in California Gay marriage ban- how do you justify denying rights to people?
I can't find a reason to justify banning same-sex marriage. Most of all---it doesn't infringe on anyone's rights. It simply extends rights---what's wrong with that?!

People I know that voted for it say that ';marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman under God'; but I say ';it's a piece of paper that legally recognizes the union of a couple in love';.

So many gays have already married---why do they want to make these marriages void? That's ridiculous discrimination.

If these traditionalists want to ';preserve'; marriage, why don't they look at the divorce statistics---THAT'S what usually affects children, not gay marriage.

Unfortunately, I think the ';Yes'; vote is leading in the polls...Prop 8 in California Gay marriage ban- how do you justify denying rights to people?
there is no such thing as ';gay marriage';...look up marriage in the bible..it will give you the definition.

Proposition 8 does not take away legal rights from anybody. Any two individuals in the state of California may enter into a domestic partnership, which, by statute, grants them all legal rights and responsibilities of married individuals (Family Code 297.5).

Contrary to the claims of the anti-prop 8 forces, marriage is not a right. Marriage is a responsibility and a legally-binding contract intended to stabilize families with children.

Numerous laws exist that restrict the ability of certain people to enter into a marriage contract. First, marriage is only allowed between adults, not minors. Second, marriage is only allowed between two individuals. Multiple partner marriages (polygamy and polyandry) are not legal. Third, marriage is not allowed between closely related individuals (brothers, sisters, and first cousins). If marriage is declared a fundamental right of all individuals, then all restrictions to marriage would be declared unconstitutional, opening the doors to polygamy, polyandry, incest, and child marriage.

Proposition 8 is not about rights, but is about protecting marriage and families against the destruction of traditional marriage through the actions of four activist judges. If the institution of marriage is declared a right for all individuals then any laws that restrict that right will be declared unconstitutional, requiring that polygamy, polyandry and incestuous marriage be made legal.

Oh yeah, Obama also doesn't support gay marriage...so quit crying.

I will answer your question with some questions . . .

Should people be given the right to kill because they were ';born with a tendency towards violence';? Should we allow people the right to steal because they don't have enough money to buy something? Or should we deny drug dealers the right to make a living in the way they are choosing to? (After all, many of their customers are ';consenting adults'; and ';it's nobody else's business what they do, and it's not affecting anyone else.';) Should a person be given the right to steal from their company's cash register as long as the ';manager on duty'; consents and goes along with the idea? Should we deny people the right to have sex with children as long as the ';child doesn't mind';?

I'm guessing you would say ';No . . we shouldn't give those kind of rights to people.'; But why not?

It's a matter of moral values. Right and wrong.

Sexual behavior is a CHOICE. It is not something you are born with, like race or gender. Allowing gays to marry is not equivalent to giving black people the right to vote. True, people are born with ';homosexual'; tendencies, but that does not mean they must act on them. If so, then we should not discriminate against murderers or child molesters, either.

As soon as we start legalizing sin (or if that is a too overly-fanatical or religious term call it ';morally incorrect';), then society will be on a slippery slope towards destruction. Just watch. You can already see it. Since ';traditional families'; (kids with both a mom and a dad) have become less common, society has spiraled downward. The legalizing of morally wrong behavior doesn't make it any more right. It just makes those doing it feel better about themselves.

America is falling apart because it's moral values are falling apart.

THAT'S how I justify it.
How dare all you people who tell gay people to ';get over'; the ban of gay marriage.

You are obviously not gay (I am not either) I know people who are gay and they have the right to get married as much as everyone else.

Stop telling them to ';get over'; it, being married means a lot to both strait and gay people.

how would a strait person feel if someone said ';oh you can have a life partner but you can't say you are married'; you wouldn't like it.
It doesn't deny rights, it just means I dint have to play make believe with people- pretending that something is something its not. It means we can call a homosexual union a civil union- and in California, we already gave them the same rights, privileges and protections under the law- and a heterosexual one a marriage. One has the potential to create children the other doesn't.

So no ';rights'; change unless calling yourself something your not is a right. That's usually called a delusion where I come from though.
I hold this truth to be SELF EVIDENT, that MARRIAGE is between a MAN and a WOMAN.

Marriage SANCTIONS procreation between a man, and a woman.

Procreation can ONLY occur between a man and a woman.

Procreation CAN NOT occur between a man and a man. Nor can it occur between a woman and a woman.

Procreation between a man and a woman is the DESIGN OF NATURE for the CONTINUATION OF THE SPECIES; and within the bonds of marriage, is the proper FAMILY UNIT created.

This does not mean that procreation is the only purpose of marriage, but it is at the CORE of its meaning. To define it any other way will lead to a ridiculous frustration of the INHERENT social morals of the said species.

This is not about rights. Nor is it about discrimination. It is about the DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE.

The definition of marriage should not be distorted. Distortion of the definition of marriage will lead to the distortion of the SOCIETY.

What then are we to do about same sex couples?

That part of society can come up with a new term and accompanying legal ceremony, although, current California law does already grant “DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS” the same RIGHTS as married couples.

(Since italics and boldface are not possible, the UPPER-CASE is meant for emphasis, not shouting.)

Obviously someone is a SORE LOSER. To me it had more to do with the opposite, gay people trying to impose on people who believe differently than they do. I believe they have the right to be happy, but not to sue others for refusing to marry them, or let them use their church facilities, which would happen sooner or later. People have a right to stand by what they believe and if the gay community had agreed to 'not sue anyone with beliefs contrary to theirs, such as pastors, priests, etc. I may have voted NO. However, that was not an option. I believe churches are good and should not be punished for standing firm in their beliefs. I voted yes on 8 and am proud I did so.
It is not a matter of denying rights to people.

You used the term over-fanatial and religion. But you fail to understand that marriage was not made by man but by God. God made marriage for man and woman. Not man %26amp; man or woman %26amp; woman.

I have no problem with the union of same sex people. They are the ones that in the end will have to answer to their creator. But I do have a problem with calling it a marriage.

If Prop 8 had not passed, the next thing that people would have been trying to get passed is the union between man %26amp; goat, for example.
AMEN

My aunt is gay and im pissed, shes just as good as everyone else and deserve those rights. So one friggin line in the bible says homosexuality is wrong, christians barely even follow the old testament anymore. besides, God created everyone equally, and there's a separation of church and state, so the law is unconstitutional.

And so ******* what if the children are taught to be TOLERANT of homosexuals? Can't do any harm.

Glad that there are ppl out there that are rational like me and you :)
Star, I cannot see any factual justification here and am moved to rebut a few comments. First, for clarity, I will state that I consider myself separated from the issue and therefor perhaps a bit objective. I am a Christian heterosexual woman married to a heterosexual man. I accept the separation of Church and State. One's personal 'moral' preferences and the law don't have to mesh. I also believe that it is God's job to judge, not mine. I see this as a successful effort to spread fear and prejudice. A married gay couple can do no harm to anyone, just by being allowed the right to make the ultimate civil commitment contract together.

That said, I know that Churches, don't have to do a religious ceremony that they feel is sacrilegious. They don't have to marry or bury anyone that they choose not to. Some Catholic Churches will not have a funeral for a person who opts to be cremated. Should we make cremation illegal?

Schools will not be required to include Gay Marriage in their classes. Perhaps when they are older and there are sex education classes, it could be discussed. Bottom line is that it is up to parents to teach their children their concept of right and wrong. Gay people exist and they will hear about them. I would think that the teaching of fidelity and commitment are more important than who one falls in love with and wants to spend the rest of their life with.

For personal reasons, my husband and I used to have a 'Domestic Partnership' (yes, hets can do this), until we realized that if he died, spousal benefits from his job would cease! There ARE limits to DPs that don't exist for married folks. They are NOT the same!

Finally, if one is doing no harm to anyone, why do we have to get into their personal business? With the passing of Prop 8, I was shocked and saddened to see the amount of baseless fear and hatred that exists towards gays in this day and time, when people are able to be better informed and society seems to have evolved beyond such prejudice and shallow thought.

Mrs. S
Relegating gays to civil unions is like saying ';separate but equal.';

What's wrong with talking about homosexuality in schools? Gays are born, not made, so it's not like kids are going to catch ';the gay'; like it's some sort of a disease. In fact, it will teach all kids to love and accept themselves, instead of offering sexual favors to strangers in the Minneapolis airport.
Nobody should be denied their rights! We are just the same as all hetero's, but just the one's discriminated on. Prop. 8 is passed of course and the ONLY thing changed is the right of marriage taken from us homosexuals. TERRIBLE. Proposition 8 is one thing created out of hate and discrimination from haters and religious folk. Everyone is entitled to their freedom of speech, but when it comes to our constitution, LEAVE IT ALONE. All the propaganda is wrong, it has NOTHING to do with our schools. As a current student, i would know...

Believe what you want.

NO ON HATE!!!
California already voted on this a couple years ago and it was the same result. it got overturned by a judge. now the people have spoken again. honestly it really isnt that big of a deal, now the gays arent considered ';married'; they still have their civil unions i believe. in California, the most liberal state in the union it passed, so if this was a nationwide thing, it would pass so easily. why should the gays force religious institutions to change their morals. hopefully there wont be another prop in 2010...
I am none of those and I voted NO. This is

ridiculous, what does it matter and there

are so many children that need homes.

And by the way, I voted for McCain and

voted NO on it.

Edit-Why would the children be embarrassed

and suffering? It wouldn't be because of gays,

it would be because of people being jerks

and cutting them down. So many children

need homes.
prop 8 DEFINES MARRIAGE! It isn't denying rights to anyone. This is not a gay rights issue!

It is about the children. This was a lie the ';no'; group told!

Schools were FORCED to teach 5 year old children about gay marriage. Churches were threatened with lawsuits if they didn't perform gay marriages.
I don't. Nobody is denying any rights to anyone. Every single citizen of California still has equal right and access to marriage. No one will be denied marriage simply because of their sexual urges. Equal access for all. Every single one. No discrimination, no loss of rights.
Gays are being pretty selfish.

(Bring on the tons of thumbs-downs!)

You know, it's not like Prop 8 will be taking away their right to join up, just their right to use the word ';married';.

Big damn deal, we all have problems, get over it, gay people. :c
Because marriage is between a man and woman, not just legally but thats the definition. Dont change the definition of marriage just because you want it to include it. Get your own word, aka domestic partnership
You really need to read the proposition. Ranting like this shows your ignorance.

Gays have ALL of the same legal rights as married couples.

Kids would have been taught gay sex in school starting at age 5.

Calm down and read the LAW!!!
Prop 8 isn't about gay rights!...its about protecting the meaning of MARRIAGE!

YES on Prop 8.
That is exactly the way I feel.
I AGREE WITH YOU 100% if some people weren't so closed minded then gays and lesbians wouldn't need to fight so hard to get a voice in. to the guy who left the first comment named attorney with the hairy pubic facial hair you must be sad lonely old man because you were rejected by everyone because you cannot accept another human being for who they are. YOU should be happy that people have accepted you for who you are, what your hobbies are and ect. yet your so selfish you cannot do it for another human being? do you even realize that there are more gays and lesbians then straight? and have you gotten your eyes repaired to know that there are far more better gays and lesbian parents out there that adopt to give a child hopes and dreams? most of the children in orphanages are because of the straight people out there that have sex and give up their kid while a gay person comes out with open arms to let that child have a better life! you are so ignorant! how can gays and lesbians be embarrassed when theyre so loving? YOU SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED BECAUSE YOU CANNOT ACCEPT!!!!
The term mariage does applies only to a couple of opposite sex joining their lives together until death.

The joining of gay people would have to make up another term to define them.

Whatever you want to call this type of relationship, they should get psychological treatment and therapy, imagine the suffering and embarrasment of their adopted children if they had any.
