I am gettting married in Indiana and the requirement is that the woman has to take a blood test for Rubella (german measles). First of all, why only the woman? Second of all, why is it required anyway? It's not like they can tell you you can't get married if you have it!Why does the women only have to take a blood test for marriage?
Because rubella can be passed from a pregnant woman to her unborn child and cause numerous complications, including miscarriage. And generally, women who get married also plan to get pregnant eventually. It's a public health measure.
Most states have gotten rid of their blood test laws. I couldn't tell you why Indiana has kept theirs. But yes, the state of Indiana can refuse to issue you a marriage license if you don't complete the necessary tests. Why does the women only have to take a blood test for marriage?
one answer for why only the woman and why it is required:
because if the woman is pregnant or becomes pregnant while she has Rubella then she could miscarry or her baby could have any number of birth defects related to the disease (cataracts, deafness, blindness, heart disease to name a few)
they will refuse to grant you the license until you have been treated. This type of test was necessary when prenatal care was not the norm for pregnant women. In this age of many people not having insurance and not seeing the doctor when they should or need to, some states have kept the tests or reintroduced the tests as a preventative measure.
I just looked up some information about rubella on-line, and it says that it causes miscarriages, stillbirths, or birth defects when a pregnant mother has the disease. That is probably why. They don't want women with the disease to get married and have babies that will be stillborn or have serious birth defects.
Every state, country, or even county have different laws that one must follow in order to get married. In all of the countries that we operate both the men and woman have to take blood tests if applicable. Rubella is a disease that affects pregnant women. Good luck!
They don't. Many states don't require blood tests at all anymore for anyone. Call them up and ask since they would be most likely to know.
The blood test was given as a way to determine if the couple was already related prior to marriage.
I have no idea, I thought that practice went out years ago because most states have done away with mandatory blood testing.....I also think its odd that the woman only has to do it.
ask the people when you go in for the test if its absolutely necessary and why
We dont do that in UK when you get to 13 you have a vaccination against rubella and you are immune for life. I always wondered why people in USA had to have blood tests before marrying.
It varies state by state. It's probably because if a woman has it, she could have a complication when pregnant and giving birth.
Rubella is a disease that may affect women that are pregnant or about to become pregnant with horrible and incurable birth defects on the fetus. Men cannot get pregnant, that's why.
Good luck
I live in Pennsylvania and we are not required to take a blood test.
I can't answer that. Louisiana doesn't require a blood test.
Twenty five years ago we both had to have blood tests in Pennsylvania. It was to rule out VD.
We did not have to take a blood test in VT.
Thats odd...Even if effects pregnancy, why is it needed to get married!?
