I know this is a stupid question. But 2007 i was single. In 2008 i got married. Can marriage couple file their taxes seperatly? Honsetly no jerky answers, PLEASE.Do marriage couple have to claim taxes together?
It's not a stupid question. Tax law is difficult to understand. If you were single for all of 2007, you have to file as single and so does your spouse. Next year when you file for 2008, you can file ';married filing jointly';. Next year, you each COULD file ';married filing separately';, but it has a much lower standard deduction, and you usually pay more tax, but there are some circumstances where it could be advantageous to do so.Do marriage couple have to claim taxes together?
For 2007, you weren't married, so you CAN'T file them together. For 2008, you will have a choice of filing a joint return, or each filing as married filing separately. The joint return will almost always give a lower tax overall.
yeah...you are filing for 2007 taxes...unless you got married in 2007 you cant file jointly now either way....
Yes.
You must file your 2007 taxes (the ones due next month) separately and as ';single'; (or possibly head of household, if you qualify), because you were not married in 2007.
You may file next year (your 2008 taxes due in 2009) either jointly, as ';married filing jointly';, or separately, as ';married filing separately';, unless you get divorced or the marriage is annulled.
Previous answer is correct, you cannot file jointly since you were not married during the tax year in question.
But even if you were married, yes, couples can choose to file separately.
you are filing taxes based on your marital status as of 12/31/2007. you can not file a joint return since you were not married.
