Because it reduces the amount of time that a women can reproduce before menopause sets in. Furthermore, once a couple do try to conceive the chances of success are lower the older the woman is. Finally, delaying the start of a family leaves people to pursue other interests in life and increase their general level of education, and there's a very well established link between higher education and lower reproductive rates.How does encouraging people to delay marriage reduce population growth?
Just to add to Mark's explanation, if you have kids at twenty you have difficulties making ends meet, you allocate less time and less money to the kids and they usually get less education.


This of course works only in places where you can live with someone only when you are married and once you are married you are expected to have children.

It doesn't. People are having children out of wedlock all over the world these days, so it really doesn't matter whether people get married any more or not. Its such a pity that morals have taken a downward spiral, but thats the way people choose to live now.
