Why are people okay with gay marriage but they oppose polygamy so much?

I do not support polygamy and I am not trying to bash gay marriage. But it seems that people are clearly against polygamy while supporting gay marriage. I would like to know why.

And please don't say ';Its like comparing apples and oranges'; because it really isn't.Why are people okay with gay marriage but they oppose polygamy so much?
This is a good question and people are so emotional right now that it is difficult to find a well-reasoned response. The scientists who study animal behavior even have a hard time getting funding because of all of the controversy.

I know I am okay with gay marriage and after seeing the FLDS in action, I feel that I am opposed to polygamy. Prior to being exposed to FLDS information, nothing about polygamy registered with me.

Scientists have nearly proven that homosexuality arises from a variation in sex hormones present when the fetus is developing. They have tracked homosexual behavior in many kinds of animals. Since homosexuality isn't ';wrong';, it is natural in a minority of individuals, I'm okay with homosexual marriage. How can we deny equal rights to people who didn't choose to be who they are? I don't think it is constitutional.

Now onto polygamy. Polygamy is practiced by a few strange religious sects or cults. It is a power trip. The men are always allowed several wives, but the women are never allowed several husbands. The culture is really patriarchal, which is unfortunate for adult females. Therefore, I would make sure polygamy remains illegal. The practice of polygamy is too subject to abuse, so sorry to those few polygamists who enjoy the set up. I guess you'll just have to buy a duplex and cut a hole in the wall between the two homes. Why are people okay with gay marriage but they oppose polygamy so much?
it is like comparing 2 to 3 or 5 or whatever.

marriage is between 2 people as currently defined.

the gay marriage debate is if it is ';any 2 people'; or not.

If polygamists want to raise the issue of more then 2, then let them.

2 different matters.

others might legitimately raise the issue of why 2 people should be sanctioned by government, why not 1? in other words why have special category of marriage at all?

all of these are fair questions, and the ultimate decision process of one is completely independent of the process for the others.
I'm OK with gay marriage, and I'm also OK with polygamy if polyandry(one woman, more than one male) is also allowed.

ha ha, to tell the truth i do believe that if a ADULT woman choose to live in polygamy, then it should be OK. since people have the right to make their own choice, and not let some religion they don't even believe tell them what to do. but the same thing can't be said for the girls in Texas, because these girls are underage and never seen the outside world and brainwashed or forced to marry a much older man. now that's really sick.
If you don't get the difference between two people committing themselves for life and a dirty old man breeding young children by the dozens there is nothing I can say to open your eyes.

Does it matter to you that all of those inbred children and their mothers receive food stamps and government welfare and donate it to their ';husbands'; who use it to build churches and other community buildings?
Hypocrites. Do as I say, not as I do kinda thing. I am not gay, and I am not a polygamist. So why would I care what these people do when it has no bearing on me? If they are consenting adults, I say leave them the hell alone!!! Everyone needs to mind their own damn business and worry about themselves, ya know? More and more it seems people try to shove their own beliefs down other people's throats. I can't stand that!
With polygamy, things get confusing. For instance, eventually a polgamous society with run-out of girls, so they start expelling boys.

Gay marriage advocates believe that everyone should be allowed ONE mate--at a time. They also support divorce.
Personally I am for both gay marriage and polygamy (and polyandry) as long as it is between 2 consenting adults. Or 3... Or 4... Or 5...
i think that they support gay marraige and not polygamy because gay marriage has two people who are at least 100% devoted to one another, but polygamy does not give 100% dedication.
The squeaking wheel gets the attention...but the majority are left out
In America, here's why:

We are a country of progress in human rights. Legalizing gay marriage means that two people of equal status are allowed to enter into a contract to merge their lives just as one would hope would be the case with heterosexual pairings. Neither person's dignity is trampled on.

Polygamy, on the other hand, is exclusively the activity of the male who wants multiple women, and the activity of a society set up by males to completely control the lives of the women and girls living in it. These women and girls are stripped of their ability to choose and are made property by men. In a nation of progress in regard to equal rights, polygamy does not satisfy the definition.

Some would claim that polyamorism is different because it may involve men and women with multiple partners, but I have seen evidence that even it has male privilege at its center. I have only seen relationships where there is a couple, male and female, and the male has many girl/boyfriends, too, but never one with a woman with multiple male partners aside from her husband or main male partner. The only way I have seen the woman have multiple partners is if her other partners are women, and even then, her male partner more often than not is sleeping with these women, too.

Homosexuality is just about body parts. Gay people love just like straight people, and their marriages are no different. There is no jack@ss trying to have a marriage and pull in multiple friends with benefits--just two people who happened to find somewhere along the way that they fall in love with people who have the same parts.

At least to the American, I think that's the big difference. I'm a woman married to a man, pregnant right now with a toddler on my knee 24/7, living the traditional American story to the fullest. I fully support gay marriage, but reject (AND DENOUNCE while I'm at it, since that's in these days) polygamy and what it does to women.
Most Gays are born that way where as polygamy is a way Children getting raped.
I don't really remember that many people supporting gay marriage.
