Marriage license in New York for Catholic church after already being married?

My wife and I were married in civil court and already have a marriage license signed and completed. We have now decided to get married in the Catholic church. The church wants a new license that the priest will sign. Can we re-apply for a marriage license after already being married? Is there a special procedure for this circumstance?Marriage license in New York for Catholic church after already being married?
I agree with the others, Jeff. Someone, somewhere along the line, got pretty confused. Just go back to the church %26amp; make it clear to them that what you are asking for is a Convalidation of Marriage.

Congrats to you %26amp; your beloved!Marriage license in New York for Catholic church after already being married?
Ok, first of all, IF YOU AREN'T CATHOLIC, WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE trying to answer to something you know NOTHING ABOUT????

To us Catholics, marriage is a SACRAMENT.

The laws of man are NOT the same as the laws of the CHURCH!

To us, you aren't even REALLY MARRIED in God's eyes UNLESS you are married in a CATHOLIC CHURCH, by a CATHOLIC PRIEST!

YES, you ARE LEGALLY married, but the asker ALREADY KNOWS THIS! He is looking for a Sacramental Answer!

Geez........

And to the asker, I do believe you should be able to get a copy of your current license, for which the priest and two witnesses can sign. I do not think you need to re-apply for anything. Go to the county courthouse (count you were married in) and explain the situation. Your doing this is not an entirely unique thing to do.

God bless you and congratulations on making your union Holy and Sacred in Our Lord's eyes.
Hmmm. There seems no need for this. You are legally married. Shouldn't the priest have his own certificate?

For example, I have a baptismal certificate from the church verifying my birth, but the birth certificate is from the state.
I don't think so. The reality is that the priest won't actually be legally marrying you (you're already married), so there's nothing for him to sign. All he'll be doing is blessing your marriage before God.

I've never heard of a church trying to bypass the law like this.
You need to talk to a priest, I think is called marriage renewal license that you need to get, that you both want to renew your vows in marriage, in a Catholic Church. That is so wonderful that you both want to renew your marriage in church.

God bless.
The Church doesn't want a NEW license...unless you have neglected to tell them that you've already been married in a civil court.

Bring the existing marriage license, and the priest will help you get your current marriage convalidated (or ';blessed';).
Typical poorly catechized novus ordo ordinand.

The Novus Ordo has replaced Catholicism.

A True priest would have never made this mistake.

.
contact the diocese where you live to get the right answers. the state wont marry you twice so they wont issue a second mariage certificate.
sorry...you cannot do that in NY...you must file an affdavit that you have never been married, or file your divorce papers..when you apply for a license in NY state.
No.

I think the priest is confused about your situation. You need to explain it to him again.

With love in Christ.
