If anything threatens the sanctity of marriage, isn't it really divorce and remarriage?

Gay marriage gets all the press, but divorce and remarriage literally tear down the vows people make to keep yourself only for the other, till death do you part, what God has joined let no man put asunder, etc...





When Christians, who divorce and remarry as much as the rest of the population, begin take marriage seriously, then people might take them seriously when they talk about the sanctity of marriage.

I would agree. I would define a marriage as a partnership between two loving individuals. There are too many marriages out there that have nothing to do with love. For those who say that it's to have children, what about childless couples or single parents? I've always thought that ';marriage'; violates the separation of church and state anyway. It would be better if we recognize ';Civil Unions'; for everybody, and if the couple wants to have it sanctified by having a wedding, that's their business.
You're right. And divorce has a much higher chance of ';harming children'; (wtf?) than gay marriage ever could.

Agreed, however, mankind has LONG since lost the battle on that one. Divorce and re-marriage was mentioned it the old testament, probably more then 1,000 years before Chrsitianity was even a thought.





It is kind of like trying to put the Genie back into the bottle., like trying to close pandora's box, etc. Like trying to UNDO the ';information age'; or give back the luxuries brought on by the industrial revolution.





Like trying to tell everyone to give up a RIGHT.





It is a noble and TRUTHFUL observation, but the battle has long been lost.

However, a CHANCE remains with SSM, and therefore that is where the battle line is drawn. That is the NEW battle front.. the last stand if you will.





THAT is why it gets all the attention, all the passionate debate and over zealous advocates on BOTH sides.








BUT, I agree with you.. divorce and re-marriage has done MUCH to destroy the sanctity of Marriage the way people look at it.. the sincerity they enter into that convenant and social contract.








MAYBE a renewed focus on saving marriages from divorce MIGHT help..and there ARE efforts in that direction. However, MANY people feel that while we fight to save marriages... we can't give up any more land, we can't loose another battle front in the process. The situation is dire and every man counts.


Many feel we can't afford to give into SSM.. We already did that about divorce. We can't make the same mistakes twice.








That is what many BELIEVE or how they see it.
