I guess Europe is just a little more advanced than America. Gay marriage is common in Europe. I mean even Russia is more advanced. Gays can serve in the Russian Army.
Oh, well, I shouldn't be suprised. America had slavery hundreds of years after slavery was outlawed in Europe. And the American Religious Right had LOTS of reasons back then for why GOD approved of Slavery.Marriage is a very basic human right. So when are ALL Americans going to consider Gays to be Human?
You are correct. And before anyone says that marriage isn't a right, the Supreme Court already said it was, in their landmark decision that put an end to the miscegenation laws that the religious right, including Jerry Falwell, vocally supported.
It was the religious right that supported slavery (while the religious left, like the Quakers, fought to end it). It was the Bible belt that enforced Jim Crow laws, and it was the religious right that opposed integration (Jerry Falwell used exactly the same language against integration that he later used against gays. He said it was against God, abomination, etc.) and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
It was the Religious Right that opposed the Equal Rights Amendment, and as a result, women still learn less than men in many places.
As we can see, history shows that it is the religious right that has always been on the wrong side of every issue, from the religious leaders who opposed Jesus, to the Salem witch trials, to slavery, to integration, to interracial marriage, and now to Gay rights and marriage. And in every case, they claimed to have scripture on their side.Marriage is a very basic human right. So when are ALL Americans going to consider Gays to be Human?
You have to remember, America was a new country while Europe went thought whole lot of shets. They experienced revolutions, age of enlightenment and renaissances. America was just starting out during the age of enlightenment. Also, many people that went to America were religious, or wanted religious freedom. We are predominately Protestant country. So, I guess, we still have a long way to go before there's even a gay marriages in most states.
i don't consider marriage a basic human right. I consider it something invented by the Church to give theocrats a semblance of control over those who love each other.
I don't think gays should need to get married, but if people define marriage specifically to keep gays separate, and then tell them their relationship merits neither legitimacy, nor social benefits, then the definition of marriage needs to change.
Either that, or people need to realize how ignorant it is to call marriage the only legally recognizable type of union.
I predict that the Supreme Court will be forced to rule that any legislation denying same-sex marriage is unconstitutional on 14th Amendment grounds within the next ten to twenty years.
Addendum: Bobhikes - ';Lastly without any value why should I change an established practice.';
Because denying equal rights to a group of citizens is unconstitutional.
If something is a violation of the Constitution, it needs to be changed.
Misty - ';God created marriage, it is to unite a man and woman, and bring life into the world. It is not a human or civil right.';
Marriage is a secular legal contract between two consenting adults and the State. The religious matrimonial union called ';marriage'; is completely irrelevant to this topic.
superb9006 - ';There is only a criteria for getting married.';
And making sex one of those criteria is a violation of the 14th Amendment, the same way making race a criterion is a violation.
When people learn to open there minds and stop hating on something they have no idea about. And I am also sick of people making it a religious problem. If you do not agree with it then fine that's your choice but do not bring God into it as if he hates homosexuals and actually make it illegal for people who love each other to marry simply because your religion says its bad and abnormal.
You won't see that until Christianity figures out a way to incorporate human sexuality into the realm of the spiritual world, as the Hindus do, or if that's too much to hope for, then until we can release America from Christianity's death grip on its politics. .
Don't hold your breath.
How can anyone answer for all Americans?
Gays serve in our armies too. I don't think it makes a whole country more advance because they believe in Gay rights, but I do believe that Gay rights should just be automatic. I suppose when each and every one of us can stand up and say Gays have Rights, we will be rid of this bigotry. In the meantime, as long as people refuse to study the Bible, and simply read their own interpretaion into the words, we will be in a stalemate over the issue.
God never approved of slavery.
I think any two consenting adults in a loving relationship who want to commit to spending the rest of their lives together should be able to. However, I believe that the institution of marriage is an outdated ritual. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my spouse and plan to spend the rest of my life in a comitted relationship with only him but I don't understand why anyone would want to get ';married';.
I know...and it p1sses me off when 'they' (anti-gay marriage) say it's a Biblical thing. They seem to forget the ancient Greeks and other civilizations that married and were fine with gay people.. Like you said, slavery treated fellow humans as subhuman and those who were defending it used the Bible. I don't see much of a difference.
Ugh. I can not believe they don't see their hypocrisy.
Edit: Israel lover...I doubt any good can come from anything you spawn.
When fundamentalist Christianity and other religions whose dogma is that homosexuality is an abomination...When these religions are relegated to the dust bin of mythology...that's when the rest of America will understand that to be homosexual doesn't mean to be less than human.
Give them a break, Europe has been around a lot longer, and America is advancing much faster than it took the Europeans... so *fingers crossed* America will be more liberal that the rest of the world in the next few decades.
Marriage is a covenant, not a contract. It is created by God, not by man. It is not a basic human right nor a civil right.
Actually, no it is not a human right. Where do you get that idea from?
God created marriage, it is to unite a man and woman, and bring life into the world. It is not a human or civil right.
If marriage was a right, you wouldn't need a license from the government to do it.
I figure that it's a Constitutional question. Why should any American citizen have the right to tell other American citizens that they can't marry each other?
I approve this message.
Signed, sealed, %26amp; delivered.
the American culture isn't old as the European culture, they had more time to evolve.
When they lose the delusion written by ignorant ancient barbarians.
I hope soon
being conservative pushes people backwards..and why should not gays have the exact same right as others?..aren't they people...i despise fundies for this
you answered your own question.
In the year 6572?
Good question.
when there is no more indoctrination
when religion separates its self from state
Rom 1:26-27 “For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.”
1 Tim 1:9-10 “realizing the fact that (civil) law is not made for a righteous man, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers”
1 Cor 6:9 “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not be deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God”
Sure marriage is a human right. And there are no laws in America which prevent anyone from getting married. But we do have criteria. Are we denying 10 year olds they're human right to get married by having them wait till at least 16? Are we denying those who are closely related to get married they're human rights? No. There is only a criteria for getting married. Same with driving, voting, drinking, smoking, getting a loan,...
Its no good just making up some assertion and then proclaiming it as truth. SInce when was marriage a basic human right - who says so and why?
And why do you believe that gay 'marriage' is in any way a proper marriage, rather than a parody of the real thing?
First Gays are humans
Second marriage is not necessary in life.
Third what value do gays bring to the established practice of marriage.
Lastly without any value why should I change an established practice.
I hope for Americas sake they never accept gay marriage.
Gay marriage is not here because the people do not want it. They know that no good can come from it.
Probably when they stop acting like pigs. And settle with the opposite sex.
