Why do some people think gay marriage will take their rights away?

That blows my mind! Give me a break! Why do some people think gay marriage will take their rights away?
Because it is a Social taboo i. e. a practice, habit, object or any material or abstract thing that is not in conformity with accepted practice in that society. It is a parallel sub law. In fact society takes their rights away. Why do some people think gay marriage will take their rights away?
Because although we are supposed to have separation of church and state, marriage has traditionally been allowed to straddle the lines between both. Churches are concerned the government will take away their rights to marry who they want and vice versa. A solution is to take the word ';marriage'; out of all civil documents and leave it for the churches. All couples, gay or straight, can be allowed to wed in a civil ceremony with the same rights as a church marriage. The leaders of churches can determine whether or not they marry gay or straight couples, based on their religious beliefs or what their congregation supports. This solution would not take anyone right's away, it would give more people the same rights as others, uphold the constitution and allow us to further practice what we preach: religious freedom and equal pursuit of happiness.
I have been married (man/woman) for 39 years. Other people marrying cannot help or hurt my marriage, as long as they keep their blinds closed.

I have asked many, many persons who oppose gay marriage how possibly recognizing marriage equality can harm their marriage. I have never heard an explanation.

When marriage equality finally occurs, it does not diminish any church's authority to conduct weddings and sign marriage licenses under their own rules. Currently, the government recognizes marriage equality between persons of different races. If a particular church does not recognize marriages between persons of different races, that church does not have to perform or recognize those lawful marriages.

They seem to be afraid. Change frightens some people.
People are afraid that their churches will be penalized by the government if they don't allow gay marriage in their church. I wouldn't put it by the liberals to sue a church because the faith doesn't include them.

There are also doctors out there that don't want to be penalized if their personal beliefs stop them from helping a patient that may be gay. Now that I don't agree with. If your a doctor you need to suck it up and help that person.
Please provide a link for your assertation. Most opponents of gay marriage stand on the principle that marriage is a religious term, and forcing gay ';marriage'; is basically the government telling the church what to do (violation of the seperation of church and state). Drop the word marriage altogether for government use, and you would see opposition diminish drastically.
Some of the most creative people in the country and they simply can not come up with another term to express thier love and devotion outside of the word ';marriage'; which to the majority of Americans means something different and has a special place in the journey of life. In trying to degrade the heterosexual majority in this countries definition they create animosity towards thier goal and thier orientation.

Yawn......

A very narcisstic bunch.
My Christian upbringing %26amp; belief system tells me that marriage is between a man %26amp; woman. However, where I seem to disagree with a lot of my fellows is that I consider our Government a secular institution and I have no problems with the State recognizing gay marriages or an equivalent (civil unions).

If God doesn't like, God will have a talk with them after their time on this earth is over. In the mean time, as another poster mentioned, gay ';marriage'; doesn't affect MY marriage in the least.
Out of ignorance and fear (and yes hate)

As for separation of church and state ...why are the religous folks messing with the right to be married by the state? Double standard hmmmmm?

People have a right to challenge anything that has been voted on and passed. That is what Democracy is about.

It will happen like it or not and those that oppose it will actually find nothing will change except for more folks being able to live in a state of marriage. What is the big deal?

Don't say because your god or you 'good book' says it isn't right. That is ONLY your belief...
i know what you mean. This totally disproves every argument they talk about in that ridiculous commercial.

A majority should NEVER EVER vote on a minorities rights! End of story. If you would have had a vote to end slavery then we would have never ended it.
why do we have the right to vote, if we said yes on prop 8 why are people able to fight it, then it makes voters not want to vote if our votes end up not counting. its ridiculous, its sad that the gay community cant just deal with the majority of voters.
I don't think many people have that problem with it.

Lots of others.

Not that one so much.

Got a survey or a source; or just an opinion?

Commercial....ok.
Gay marriage will happen. I suppose we have to get used to it
