If homosexual marriage passes there is already in progress for polygamous marriage to go next riding on the coattails of that decision. The main Mormon church has turned against polygamy and is embarrassed by the break-off churches that practice it. Are they afraid of polygamy being legalized and bringing more embarrassing light on them? Are they afraid that if polygamy is legalized God will make them do it again? Is this why they are fighting so fiercely against gay marriage? Are Mormons afraid that if gay marriage passes then God will make them go back to polygamy?
This is a very interesting thought. I know they believe there will be polygamy in heaven, I think you have to have polygamy to be one of their Gods. So it would be interesting to see if they would go back and how it would be introduced or regulated. I think at the beginning of the church only the high up people were told about it and allowed to practice because there was a fear of losing members who wouldn't agree. Some people believe that their scriptures say you have to be a polygamist in order to go to their heaven, the celestial kingdom, and that is why some of those break off churches practice it. I bet there would be a lot of people who wouldn't accept it and their rising growth would probably suffer as well. Will be interesting to see if it happens, good question! Are Mormons afraid that if gay marriage passes then God will make them go back to polygamy?
They seem to have pushed their polygamy into the spotlight all by themselves with there intolerance on this gay issue.
This is a church that is trying so hard to be more mainstream that they would never consider polygamy again. Many of their members would leave, and it would attract few new ones that could afford to pay them tithes. It isn't gonna happen.
This has nothing to do with the Mormon Church, it was individuals who happen to be Mormon who supported Prop. 8 in California. My state is taking up Gay marriage soon, and thankfully our Governor has already said he would oppose it, but I suspect that the Mormon individuals in our state will do the same as the Mormon individuals in California.
the mormons were what... 3% of the voters in california? and the anti prop-8 raised more money than the pro prop 8. didn't they? I think you're giving the mormons too much credit.
Also you're making the assumption that God forced mormons to be polygamists againts their will, and that he'll do it again. That's a new stance for anti-mormonists.
I think you're stretching pretty far on this question. but don't give up. Just take a deep breath, think hard, and I promise you'll think of some other reasons to hate mormons.
It's not really a Mormon specific issue.
It's a christian bigotry, that pretty much all christians need to get over.
they just don't understand seperation of state and church
in one word....
no.
god did not create the law/prop. man did
LDS can say they don't practice it, but as LDS who recognize this ordinance as valid beyond the grave, they must say they do still practice it.
So, the answer to the question, Do Mormons Practice Polygamy? is Yes.
But they must wait for the millinium to get a physical body to procreate then.
The Mormon church wants to distance themselves from the FLDS but they had the first same few prophets ane are just following their views on polygamy.
Brigham Young
Quote:
Brigham Young said you are damned if you deny polygamy.
';Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned.'; (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, p. 266). Also, ';The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy.'; (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 11, page 269).
The LDS Church STILL teaches polygamy as a tenet. It is NOT, however, practiced today because of the LAWS against it.
That doesn鈥檛 mean it isn鈥檛 a tenet, which of course means IT IS CONDONED. They practice it every day, in Mormon Temples all over the world.
Is it not hypocritical to criticize those practicing POLYGAMY when in fact, many of them (church hierarchy) are practicing SPIRITUAL POLYGAMY even today?
Dallin Oaks remarried and was sealed to his second wife. The sealing to his FIRST wife, who passed away, WAS NOT CANCELLED. He is a spiritual polygamist, and because of the Mormon belief that marriage is eternal, and going BY that belief, he will live in the Celestial Kingdom WITH HIS TWO WIVES as a POLYGAMIST.
Plus they believe ALL the polygamy of the past will be together forever. (sealed) procreating in the sealed families rhelm (world!)
Personally I do not think the LDS church will ever have polygamy be allowed ever if the laws allowed for it. ';Most'; LDS women in my opinion think polygamy is sick and wrong for these days.
The LDS leaders have taught sugarcoated truths about polygamy in the past. That there were more women than men (lie) Or that the wife husband had died. (lies)
NOTE:
Joseph Smith had 34 wives,11 who were already married and 8 of those women to faithful mormon men!! He had mother/daughter duos and sisters...Thats facts. Brigham Young had 35 to 55 wives and 57 children. YEt this is not brought up in everyday mormon teachings. They kind of paint him as monogamous!
I have seen an ex sister in law in TEARS about polygamy in the celestial kingdom (highest level of mormon heaven) when her husband was joking with a brother about multiple wives in heaven.
ITS a sensitive subject with mormon women. So not I do not think LDS will ever allowed it here. They want to look mainstream
