I know things are different when the wedding is taking place in another country, however what about if say a person from Ohio wanted to get married in Colorado. Do they use a Ohio wedding license or a Colorado one?Do you have to get married in the state where you get your marriage license?
You would need a Colorado license. That would be issued in the county that the marriage is to take place.Do you have to get married in the state where you get your marriage license?
Where I live you have to get married in the COUNTY that you applied for a marriage license.
In most states, your marriage license has to be from the county and state you will be marrying in. For instance, my sister and her fiancee lived in NJ, their wedding was taking place in OH. They had to come to the county office in OH where the wedding was taking place to get their license.
You absolutly without a doubt have to get the marriage license in the place where you are getting married...... in your case it would be Colorado.
One part of this is that the pastor, preist, rabbi or whatnot in Colorado is licensed to do marriages in Colorado only. So if you had an Ohio license he can't sign it so your marriage would not be considered legal.
I know one couple that was getting married in another state but because of work issues and travel arrangements would not be arriving in the other state until the night before the wedding. So no time to get the license. So the morning before they traveled they went and got a license and got married at the courthouse.
Now some would say that takes away from the ceremony as you are already married. The way they saw it was the first part was just a legality. They were not ';married'; until they did the full ceremony and exchanged rings.
YOu get a license in the county where you will be married
You must get married in the state where the license is issued. The license isn't valid in another state. The marriage is valid in all places, but the license to marry is only valid in that state. It's no big deal to get one in Colorado. You must check on the state laws, some require that you be a residence for so long before they will issue one, in others it doesn't matter if you live there or not. I live in Ohio got married in Florida, got license in Florida. We got our license the same day we got married. Some have a waiting period after the license is issued before the marriage can take place.
