Gay marriage supporters: What is the bigger problem with Prop8?

1) the religious people who voted against gay marriage.

2) the fact that equal rights were made subject to popular vote.Gay marriage supporters: What is the bigger problem with Prop8?
Definitely number 2. Popular vote in most cases can not ensure equal rights for everyone. If it could, there would be no reason to fight for equal rights or a popular vote. That's why the judicial system is there, to make sure everyone is equal before law. In a secular country like the United States, the very idea of proposition 8 seemed unconstitutional to me.

Number one is not unexpected, if people follows some two thousand year old book and claims their interpretation of this book is the only right one, then it's also expected from them to vote against gay marriage. But even in a democracy, people should not be given a chance to vote for something that can cause discrimination.

However, the main problem it seems to me is bigger than just proposition 8 or churches donating money. If only children were taught to think for themselves and make up their own mind about what's right and what's wrong and the importance of tolerance then gay marriage(or any other civil right for that matter) would not have been an issue in the first place. I was lucky enough to be raised up that way, and I know for me that has made all the difference. Gay marriage supporters: What is the bigger problem with Prop8?
Definitely 2.

';Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to eat for lunch.';

-Benjamin Franklin

Tyranny of the majority is always a concern. The irony is that a group of religious people felt that straight marriage would be so threatened by homosexuality that they choose to dissolve the marriages of thousands of homosexual families. They basically attacked those families and said ';you're not equal to us'; doing the same thing they claimed gays were doing to them. That's just wrong.

What ticks me off more is people who say ';I have nothing against gays but I just don't think they should marry.'; They have something against gays if they vote against equal civil rights. There is no way to mask discrimination.
why are you all even still debating it. The majority of the voters voted for prop 8, therefore they didn't want gay marriage to be legal in California. The majority of voters in this country elected Obama, and we are all supposed to get over it and support him as our president even if we disagree with him. So why don't you all just accept that the majority of voters didn't want gay marriage and move on. So we are supposed to just be ok with what the majority voted for, but you who support gay marriage are whining. It was voted on and the people had their say. MOVE ON!!! And obviously it wasn't just religious people who voted yes on it. The majority voted yes on it. Now you can't tell me that the majority in California are religious people!!!
i think both, definitely.

heres my little rant on prop 8:

i think peoplpe for prop 8 think they are better than gay people?

no?

than why can't they have the same rights? do you think they don't deserve the same rights?

all people should be free to do as they wish. do what you like and let others do as they like. it's not hurting anyone.

love is love. it is cruel to seny an expression of love. marriage, as a basic right.

CRUEL
I do not support gay marriage.. but just wanted to add in that not all people who are against it do so because of religion. I oppose gay marriage on a completely non religious level. I have 3 sons and it is hard enough to explain puberty without confusing them even more! Among several other reasons why it is just not right, sorry...

Just wanted to say that, I have seen a ton of these questions and religion is tied into all of them.

What I don't get is how a vote where the popular vote sets a precident, how can that be overturned? Is that not the definition of democracy? Too bad if you don't like the outcome, would it have been overturned if popular vote had said it was ok?

OK since we are throwing out hypotheticals... so, homosexuality is simply the want/lust/love/sexual preference of an individual that is no different from a hetros want/lust/love/sexual preference... the difference being the want for someone of the same sex instead of the opposite sex... ok... right... agreed... I think everyone can agree on that point... and I totally get that they are born with this and can not control who they love... great... everyone agreed?

OK... so, should we then.. since we want to be so fair... allow pedifiles to marry who they want/lust/love/sexually prefer? What if it a 57 yr old man who prefers 11 yr old girls and can find one who would consent (in this day and age that wouldn't be as hard as one might think)... so should we allow it??

This is apples to apples people. By passing gay marriages we are opening the door to other sexual deviants (look up the word deviant before thumbs downing people) to have 'rights' when it comes to their sexual preferences. I am sorry but wanting the opposite sex is how we as a race are designed. Sometimes in any design there are variations... but I view pedifiles and homosexuals as the same... not criminally... I don't think homosexuals need to be arrested... they aren't hurting anyone... just like saying that HIV and AIDS are the same thing... no they aren't, but they are the same as far as the virus, it is just how it comes out in the body....

So, sorry... I am religious, but this is a no brainer, open one door to sexual variations and you open pandoras box for other 'sexual variations' to want the same rights.
both!! im 14, i am NOT gay, but im open minded enough to respect people's desicions on their sexuality! i think tht banning gay marriages is absolutely stupid, close minded, and completely crap! people should be able to do whatever they want in tht specific area of subject... ur completely righte on both matters! and i think tht it shouldnt even be up for discussion whether same sex marriages are allowed!! i dont understand why people have to be so prejudice but obviously its the type of society we have raised
No 2. Faith based initiatives (and that's what this is) have no place in a democracy based on equal rights for all.

No 1 is just annoying. I am damn sick and tired of being in a minority as a straight white woman who doesn't need Jesus to be whole and happy.
As for #2, the state supreme court will likely overturn the proposition for that reason.

However- it reminds me of something that Ben Franklin said:

Democracy is two lions and a lamb, voting on what to have for lunch.
Both are horrid. I mean the idea of putting someone's rights to a vote its sickening and to have people vote to take it away is even more sickening.
2. americans have always been proud of standing for liberty and justice for all, and equal opportunity for all. then they go and pass a law like this
2 - equal rights should never be subjected to popular vote because. What would happen if some group decided that we shouldn't allow Jews to marry, or that Blacks should lose their voting rights?
easily #2

The whole point of the Constitution was to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.
There is NO problem with it. I don't really understand why people ask for an opinion about something, when they feel that there is no opinion to be had.
i am a christian, but 13 and not allowed to vote.

i support homosexuals 100 percent...probably number one
The fact that this is the first time civil rights were taken away from a group of people.
Imagine if slavery had been put to the popular vote? We would still be owning people.
To be honest it is a combo, but point two is in fact the bigger problem.
2) majorly.
Church and State should be separated.

That's the bigger problem.
2. Civil rights shouldn't be granted or not at the whim of the majority.

The fact that the people of california chose to take rights away from anyone for any reason. Shame Shame
2
both but two has got to be the worst, its disgusting.
How about....no one is allowed to disagree?
i do not vote and THIS IS THE REASON WHY
both
You are not talking 'civil rights'

This is a moral issue

Homosexuality is immoral

It is dangerous health wise

It is dangerous financially to the USA. ( Survivor benefits from SSI would bankrupt SSI

long before it is now projected to run out of money. If you fight for gay marriage, you are

agreeing to possibly give up ever being able to collect your SSI.

It is detrimental to our society

It is detrimental to our CHILDREN!

If I were a betting man, which I am not, I would bey that 99.9% of the people who claim

to be FOR gay marriage would not want their two year old children exposed to what the

homosexual community stands for, i.e. the gay parades in San Fran and such.

Kp

The Gay Agenda's assertion that it was ';mandatory';

Thank Mayor Newsom of San Franscisco for this.
none of the above
