How much money should a girl (considering marriage) have in the bank?

How much money should a girl (considering marriage) have in the bank?

I'm still young so I don't know much about the economy and what bills to expect.

If you could suggest an annual salary for

A) a single girl in her early 20's, and

B) a married girl in her early 20's, what would it be?How much money should a girl (considering marriage) have in the bank?
The salary will depend on the job. The job will depend on the education and skills...it has NOTHING to do with marital status.

A woman should *never* say, oh, gee, I'm going to get married, have children and my husband will take care of me, so I don't need college, don't need a career and I'll take a crappy job that pays little because I'm worthless.

That attitude tends to find you divorced, raising 2 children, no child support and scrambling to find a decent job to pay the bills.

Yes, many women still drift towards jobs that have high demand (teaching, nursing) with the plan to stop out once they have children...and the expectation that they will go back after 6 years. Many find they never stop working. Careers that expect a lot of overtime and travel are also an issue, but many women still become lawyers and consultants.

As for money in the bank, do not leave home until you have 6 months of savings in the bank. Apartment leases are for a year and if you move in with a lousy roommate or a dud fiance, you can discover that *you* will be paying the entire rent for rest of the year even though they promised to pay half.

If you get married, your pre-marital counseling should include a financial management course. While financial decisions in marriage will be made together, both incomes and both attitudes towards money are important. How much money should a girl (considering marriage) have in the bank?
Thank you!

You must always have a minimum of 3 to 6 months of expenses in your ready-cash reserves. When times get tough, you need at least 9 - 12 months.

These days, when the economy is the worst it has been since the Depression, and many people remain unemployed for well over a year despite intensive jobhunting, make sure you have at least 12 months of reserves. So if you need a minimum of $2000/mo. to cover necessary expenses, you should have at least $24,000 in reserves. Better, have investments that you can develop as a second stream of income for emergencies.

Ditto for single, couple, family - you now need 12 months of reserves and NO debts! Whether your household needs $2000/mo or $5000/mo, multiply by 12.

Salary? What sort of education, training, skills, experience, expertise do you have? For early 20's, salary could be minimum wage or $100,000/yr, depending on what you have to offer employers. So what abilities do you have that employers desperately need right now? Marital status is irrelevant when it comes to jobs.
why should that matter? and why would the answer be any different from how much money should a guy have?

Dowries don't exist anymore - it's YOUR money

everyone should try and have an emergency fund of 3-6 months worth of expenses - probably more like 6-12 months with the current economy, but very few people probably even have one month's worth of expenses in savings
What's more important than having a savings is having your credit report squared away. If that is already done then a single girl should follow the same rule as anyone else and that is, have 3 months worth of expenses saved up.

The only reason a married woman (or man) might be expected to have more savings than a single person is that the married person might be expected to be a little more settled down.
your bank balancd is not as important as your earnings power over next 30 years.

do you have college degree and good job so that you have some earnings power?
Ask your parents, they have already been there and done that.
8 to 12 months of living expenses in case of job loss.

That is your emergency account and not to be used for anything else
depends shawty, whatcha drank?
