How to go about combining names in marriage?

My fiance and I want to combine our last names, but are confused as to how to do this. I'm told that only one of us has to have a legal name change and that the other can assume that name when we marry...but then wouldn't one of us have to sign the marriage certificate with the new name? Or do we keep our names at the wedding and change the name after? How to go about combining names in marriage?
It depends on the state you are in. In certain states you can simply put the new name in the marriage license. In some states you will need to go to court. Check with the city/county clerks office.

I would strongly recommend doing it on your marriage license, if possible, since the court process costs additional fees and takes time. How to go about combining names in marriage?
You sign the marriage document with your current legal/birth name. Any name changes due to marriage happen after the certificate is signed.

If one of you wants to legally change your last name right now you can. When you marry, the person will sign with that legal name and yes, only the other person will have to change their name after.
i would just wait till after. if you really want to change your name then you can wait till after marriage. just like they say about sex and marriage, it will be that more special and another way to show love if you wait till you actually are married. because when married you are starting a new family and what better way to seal the deal after marriage then by combining last names. good luck.
