Why do people say allowing gay marriage would be dishonorable?

I find that it's a strange argument when people respond to the question, ';why can't gay people get married?'; with, ';because it would be disgracing the honor of marriage.'; This is so stupid! America is not a country that honors marriage! No country that has such a high divorce rate and watches shows like ';the bachelor'; or ';flavor of love'; is a country that HONORS marriage. Why do people say allowing gay marriage would be dishonorable?
Apparently the definition of a word is more important than someone's rights to some people. Many European countries have legalized gay marriage, and their society hasn't collapsed, they haven't legalized bestiality, and the gay population hasn't skyrocketed.

People who say that it would be dishonorable just think that heterosexuals are better than homosexuals. Why do people say allowing gay marriage would be dishonorable?
I think we all wish to honor marriage. We often fail but want to see marriages work. So that is honoring marriage.

Gay marriage destroys the definition of marriage and if we can't define marriage, we can't protect and assist marriage at least at a government level.

We will be better off if we get government out of the marriage business altogether (also the civil partnerships business).
